Our Story
The Refuge (known originally as E. Northport Gospel Church), was birthed in prayer. As Rev. James Steffens and his father considered parcels of land, the Lord led them to a vacant lot in E. Northport. The timely sale of a piece of land in Florida and a lot of used lumber allowed a church to be built for $20,000 before there was even a congregation, or the first offering taken. This all happened in 1957. When the doors finally did open, 53 people filled the pews for the first time. Growth followed, and an educational wing was added in 1963. Through the years, countless thousands of lives have been touched and changed. This is a testament to the many faithful who have served, but even more so to a God Who has in the past, and now continues to show Himself faithful. Great things have been accomplished over the years, but as always with the Lord, we believe the best is yet to come!
