Encounter: Devotion
Everything Changes
by Josh Steffens
My favorite part about the woman at the well who encounters Jesus is that she drops her jug of water and runs home to tell everyone what had just happened. She held high value on that water. I'm sure it was a difficult journey everyday to get water. She dropped what she placed value in because her values changed. She accepted the living water that Jesus offered her.
I can relate to her. When I encountered Jesus in the 11th grade everything changed. Everything I held valuable (friends, drinking, parties, sports, etc...) seemed pale in comparison to this new thing I found. I found living water and I have yet to thirst again. I not only valued new things, but just like the women, I rushed home to tell everyone what happened. You see, the things in this world will satisfy, but you need to return to them time and time again because their satisfaction is temporary. One encounter with Jesus will allow you to feel satisfaction that lasts into eternity.
Read Mark 12:28-34
It's an awesome story. Here we have this teacher of the law. Someone who had been studying religion his whole life, fully committed to his belief system. He has one encounter with Jesus and everything changes. He agrees with Jesus and declares that he is right! I love that Jesus responds to him saying, "You are not far from the Kingdom".
All you need is one real encounter with Jesus and everything changes. You will never regret that encounter. Seek it! Surrender all to him, ask him to meet you and watch how amazing the living water is. You will surely taste and see that the Lord is good.
